Tattoo Prep Guide

Getting your first tattoo is exciting, but it can also feel a little intimidating if you don’t know what to expect. Preparing the right way makes a big difference, not only for your comfort during the session, but also for how well your tattoo heals.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to make sure you’re ready for the big day.

One Week Before Your Appointment

  • Shave the area carefully.
About 7 days before your appointment, gently shave the area to be tattooed.
Take your time and avoid cuts at all costs. A clean, smooth surface makes the whole process easier and more precise.

  • Moisturize daily.
This is one of the most important steps.
Apply a gentle, fragrance-free cream (CeraVe or Eucerin are excellent options, available in most pharmacies) to the area 2–3 times a day. Healthy, hydrated skin takes ink better, heals faster, and even makes the tattoo less painful.

The Night Before

  • Rest well.
A good night’s sleep lowers stress, improves your pain tolerance, and helps your body start the healing process right away.

  • Eat properly.
Have a balanced dinner the night before and a good breakfast or lunch the day of your appointment. Steady blood sugar = steady energy.

On the Day of Your Tattoo

  • Eat and hydrate.
Don’t arrive on an empty stomach. Bring snacks and something with sugar (juice, soda, or even candy) to keep your energy up during the session.

  • Dress smart.
Wear dark or black clothes you don’t mind getting stained, and make sure they allow easy access to the area being tattooed. For example: short sleeves for a forearm piece, shorts for a thigh.

  • Bring entertainment.
Long sessions can take hours, so bring headphones, music, or something else to pass the time.

  • Arrive with clean skin.
Shower before your appointment, but don’t apply lotion, oils, or perfumes that day.

After Your Session

Once the tattoo is complete, aftercare is just as important as the preparation. I’ll give you clear instructions to follow so your tattoo heals smoothly and keeps its sharpness for years to come.

Final Thoughts

Your first tattoo should be a positive and memorable experience.
With the right preparation, hydrating your skin a week in advance, sleeping well, fueling up, and showing up ready, you’ll set yourself up for the best possible result.
